Joe presents with multiple symptoms of Substance Abuse Disorder. He has a history of using Oxycontin as well as mixing it with Ambien and Klonopin, the latter of which is his wife’s prescribed medication. Joe states that his doctor cut his Oxycontin dosage a few weeks ago, at which time he began experiencing “panic attacks,” characterized by tightness in the chest, shortness of breath, and sweating. His first “panic attack” occurred during a vacation when his wife forgot to bring her “extra” medications that she adds to dosages. Based on the subjective data provided, Joe meets the DSM-5 criteria for Substance Use Disorder: taking the substance in larger amounts or longer than intended, craving for the substance, tolerance, and withdrawal (American Psychological Association, 2013)………….
