Initial Post Instructions
This week you will read about architecture. The lesson includes information on Roman architecture, which was greatly influenced by the Greeks and Etruscans.

Locate at least two architectural works that were influenced by Greco-Roman architecture. These can be from any time period after the Greco-Roman period but should be from different periods themselves (e.g., one from Renaissance and one from Baroque). Then address the following:

  • What is the function of each structure?
  • How does each work exhibit influence of the Greco-Roman period? Is the influence specifically Greek, Etruscan, or Roman – or a combination?
  • How would you compare the two selected works? Take the role of the evaluative critic.

Use examples from the text, the lesson, and the library to help support your answer. Please remember to provide images and citations to help illustrate your points.

SOLUTION

What is the function of each structure?

Maison Carree, an ancient Roman temple in Nîmes, was a place to worship. It was one of the many deities of the Roman polytheistic religion. Polytheistic, meaning they worshiped many deities, and each one needed sacred spaces where it could be worshiped columns could become a part of the wall itself and function as pure decoration, for example, the upper floors of the Colosseum exterior. Also, Maison Carree was known to be one of the best preserved Roman temples to survive in the territory of the former Roman Empire.  It has one of the best maintained facades from the Roman Empire. The Greco-Roman influence can be seen in the large Corinthian order (The Tiles of India, 2021).

The function of the Greek Theatre of Taormina, Sicily was used for operatic and theatrical performances and for concerts. This would also accommodate dramatic performances or musical, it was transformed during the Roman times to make room for games and gladiatorial battles (The Tiles of India, 2021).

How does each work exhibit influence of the Greco-Roman period? Is the influence specifically Greek, Etruscan, or Roman – or a combination?

Greek influence is evidenced in the fact that late Republican innovation, such as the basilica and bath buildings, usually occurred first in the south of Italy in Campania, which was closer to the long-established Greek colonies of Magna Graecia.….please click the purchase button below to access the entire solution at $10
