I believe that a liberal arts curriculum can put you in touch not just with ways of interpreting the world around us but also with the fact that the world can be “interpreted” in the first place. Ultimately, it tries to help us understand our position in it and our relationships with each other.

It forces us to see multiple viewpoints and continually challenge their own. It removes the comfort of assuming there are “right” answers to big questions, that civilization moves in a linear fashion or that facts are facts no matter who looks at them. But it also introduces us to the pleasures of debate and the ever-expanding world of ideas. It opens doors, enabling the mind to go wherever it wants in the pursuit of knowledge and understanding. It bends toward openness instead of containment.

In times of great division, the capacity to see others’ viewpoints and the imperative to assess one’s own become more and more critical. A liberal arts education works for us, no matter what our political leanings are. I believe we need it now more than ever.

SOLUTION

  • What is the value of studying the humanities in the field of health professions?

Humanities became of interest in the health care sciences, in the U.S in the 1960s once the General Medical Council (GMC) acknowledged necessary changes in the curriculum giving importance to instruction in humanities, along with medical training. The main three reasons for these changes are based on the importance that reading patients stories/experiences can help health care students develop an understanding of their patients, literature can further improve the capacity of students to see their own biases and believes, and finally, literature enhances critical thinking and create a base for ethics and moral principles. (Chamberlain University, 2021)

  • How might a topic such as art, literature, music, dance, etc. from other time periods enhance your career and personal life in the present?

Asides from ethics I could not think of any other reason why art could be to the career of nursing, but as I went on, I realized that arts can have a great impact in our health care education, as art and humanities can definitely contribute to improve our awareness of others, as well as encourage empathy and inventiveness, as much as they promote our intellectual capacities. (Roberts, 2021)
