HEALTH TOPIC | ANSWER |
State the topic you have selected for your Teaching Project. (Please select from the list provided in the Teaching Project guidelines located in Module 4.)
Describe in detail why this is an important topic for patient education. Use evidence from the textbook, lesson or an outside scholarly source to support your rationale. |
Geriatric Safety
Falls in the elderly often cause severe injuries and are one of the most costly health conditions among older adults. Many falls are preventable. (Stevens, 2018) The implementation of even a single intervention to prevent falls avert USD $94 to $442 million in direct medical costs annually. (Stevens, 2018) This topic focuses on strategies to prevent falls in older persons and is critical education not only for the elderly, who often are reluctant to adapt safety measures, but also for family members who are caring for their loved ones. |
POPULATION | ANSWER |
Describe, in detail, the characteristics of the population you are planning to teach with the Visual Teaching Tool. |
My presentation will be beneficial to the elderly population in the community, but just as important is to include the family members who look out for them. The children of parents who are between the age of 65 and up are frequently put into the role of caregiver for their parents. If they are educated as to the benefits of home safety, they can encourage and aid their parents to make their home safer, so they can continue to live independently and safely. |
BARRIERS | ANSWER |
What are some potential learning barriers for this population of learners? (Barriers might be cultural, physical, educational, or environmental. Refer to the assigned article in the project guidelines for more information.) |
Potential learning barriers for this particular group may be that of their physical inabilities to read small print or hear the presentation clearly. Some participants may be set in certain ways at their old age and may find it hard to come to terms with changes in a safer lifestyle. |
