Opiates are among the most potent and reliable analgesics, but they as well significantly attributable to drug and substance addiction in the US. The drugs come with unique problems for care providers of the day. For many decades, opiates have effectively been used in treating acute and severe pain that comes after trauma, extensive burns, and surgical procedures (Farisco et al., 2018). The drugs are as well prescribed for controlling pain in patients suffering from terminal illnesses. Researchers indicate that opiates are excellently effective, more so, in time-bound cases. For this reason, they are now part of standard care. On top of analgesic side effects, the drugs also come with unmitigated impacts. At times, they lead to mild sedation and also eradicate anxiety, while also causing a palpable sense of wellness, sometimes leading to euphoria. In this sense, they could lead to substance abuse and addiction over time. In this assignment, I look into the ethical issues touching on patients and the opiate prescriptions, as well as the healthcare provider.

Scenario

I had a rather interesting experience with a 47-year-old female patient. She sought medical services from the emergency department (ED), claiming that her arthritis was getting severe and that her OxyContin had run out and required an instant refill. Due to her insistence, I looked into the prescription oversight program and realized that it was a bit earlier for the refill. Upon enquiring about reasons for an early refill, she claimed that she intended to leave the state soon and hence wanted her stock in place before leaving.
