- Option 1: This week we learned about several different theories of motivation including, McClelland’s theory of motivation, drive reduction theory, arousal approaches, incentive approaches, and Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Describe a recent accomplishment in your life and explain it in terms of at least two theories of motivation discussed in the text. SOLUTION
In this week’s topic, we are to discuss motivation. “Motivation is the factor that direct and energize the behavior of humans and other organisms” (Feldman, 2018). A recent event in my life that I consider as an accomplishment is successfully transitioning from the military life to the civilian, someone who served knows what I am talking about, it takes more than growing a beard and buying a jeep, though I did both. Before deciding to leave the military, one must set forth a goal to accomplish, “cognitive approaches to motivation suggest that motivation is the outcome of people’s thoughts, beliefs, expectations, and goals” (Feldman, 2018). For me, that goal is to fulfill my calling in the healthcare field, that motivated me and gave me the strength to take the leap.
The leap does take more than one hop, what I mean by that is you need to fulfill your hierarchy of needs. “Maslow’s model places motivational needs in a hierarchy and suggests that before more sophisticated, higher-order needs can be met, certain primary needs must be satisfied” (Feldman, 2018). You have a target goal but you need to keep the sense of fulfillment along the way to keep you motivated for the bigger goal.
