According to Feldman (2019), Kohlberg’s Theory of Moral Development consists of three levels: Level One (preconventional morality), Level Two (Conventional morality, and Level Three (postconventional morality). The first level, preconventional morality, lasts to about the age of nine and the main factors at this level is to rather avoid the consequences of being punished and focus on rewards. The second level, conventional morality, occurs in most adolescents and adults, is exemplified by acceptance of social rules regarding right and wrong in our judgements (Mcleod, 2013). The third level, postconventional morality, usually reached by the age of thirteen, is characterized by an individual’s universal ethical principles such as life preservation and human dignity (Mcleod, 2013).
