Module 1 Assignment: Case Study Analysis
A 42-year-old man comes to clinic with chief complaint of pain, redness, and swelling of his right calf. He states that he had been working in his yard using a string trimmer when the trimmer slipped and cut his leg. He cleaned the wound with water from the garden hose and covered the wound with a large Band-Aid. Several days later, he developed fever to 100.6˚ F and chills and noticed that his leg was swollen and red. He comes to the emergency department for definitive care.
Explanation of Symptoms
The patient complained of pain, redness, and swelling in his right leg caused by a wound infection. A wound infection arises when germs or bacteria invade the injured skin, where they multiply and set off a chain reaction. Patients may usually handle minor wound symptoms such as pain, redness, and swelling at home. Still, a medical professional must treat more severe wound infections that present with fever, chills, or nausea, such as the one described above. Due to his lack of wound care, this patient’s symptoms worsened. The patient used hose water to clean the incision and wrapped it with a big bandage. Cleaning a wound includes:
