Concerns about nurse turnover became a priority due to nursing shortages that were exacerbated by the pandemic. These concerns are related to retaining an adequate number of nurses to maintain safe care and decrease overwhelming existing employees with an increased workload. Also, there is an economic concern related to the cost of turnover, the cost of hiring and filling vacancies, as well as training of newly hired and qualified nurses. The costs of posting jobs, advertising, recruiting, orienting, and training new nurses are considered direct costs of turnover.
