Introduction

This discussion will explore the value of a master’s education in nursing. Please provide an initial response to the discussion question by Wednesday at 11:59pm MT and two interactive dialogue responses no later than Sunday 11:59 PM MT at the end of WEEK 7. The discussion is worth 75 points. Reflect on an experience in which you were directly involved or witnessed incivility in the workplace. Provide a brief synopsis of the situation. How did this make you feel? How did you respond? What were the consequences of this situation? Provide an example of how this negatively affected the work environment and outcomes. How could the situation have been prevented? Discuss strategies that would support a healthy work environment.

ANSWER

When I mentally replay incivility situations I’ve encountered in my nursing career, most of them occurred either in my first year of nursing or while I was a travel nurse. The saying, “nurses eat their young,” unfortunately, is extremely common and very accurate. I remember the first rapid response I called on one of my patients. She was a post-op hip replacement older woman that had received multiple rounds of intravenous and oral pain medications in the recovery room before coming up to my department.
