In Kaiser Permanente Vallejo Medical Center (KPV), risk management and quality improvement measures were initiated and put into official policy and procedure format for the prevention of pressure injuries (PI’s). This Pressure Ulcer Prevention and Treatment policy and procedure of May 2008 was implemented when Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced that starting October 2008 they would no longer pay for services caused by a hospital acquired condition (HAC) which includes stage III/IV pressure ulcers (CMS, n.d.). In following the Joint Commission’s recommendations and evidence-based practice, and with the involvement of hospital staff, the P&P was implemented on every patient. This brief will summarize the policy & procedure (P&P), discuss stakeholders and their responsibilities in sustaining it, consider the legal & ethical responsibilities in sustaining it, and how KPV continue to be accredited by the Joint commission; showing along the way how all these aspects lead to quality and excellent healthcare.
