  • Assess if the United States foreign policy during the 1930s helped to promote World War II. Could the United States have prevented the outbreak of World War II? If so, how? If not, why not?
  • Explain if the United States, despite neutrality, aided the Allies against the Axis powers.
  • Analyze if the use of atomic (nuclear) weapons to defeat enemies in war is a setback for democracy (President Truman’s decision to drop the atom bomb on Japan).

Treaty of Versailles

The Treaty of Versailles, for several different reasons, was a highly contentious agreement. Although it was supposed to be the treaty that ended World War I which was placed in order to promise no further war, the Treaty of Versailles brought good and bad things (OpenStax, 2019). Indirectly, the settlement was the catalyst for World War II, helping to sow the seed for the violence that would occur in the Second World War. In the development of the global Great Depression and World War II, the Treaty of Versailles played a significant role. The Treaty of Versailles was not the exact cause of either the Great Depression or World War II, but it played a major role in both. Article 231 of the Treaty specifies that Germany shall be kept responsible for the war and all the harm caused by the war (OpenStax, 2019). Article 232 took this responsibility a step forward and said that Germany should pay or refund all losses to the Allied nation forces. The German people searched for a leader that gave their lives balance and prosperity as a consequence of those tough times. Adolf Hitler then arrived, promising a world devastated by war, extreme reparations and hope.

Hitler and Nazi Party

Hitler and his Nazi party vowed to return Germany to the pre-World War 1. They reconstructed Germany’s military and pursued Italy and Japan’s support in bringing about military victory.
