The American civil war began in 1861, with the immediate trigger being the election of President Abraham Lincoln in 1860 (Corbett et al., 2017). President Lincoln’s election led to the secession of eleven Southern states that formed the Confederate States of America. The Republican victory was perceived as a threat to the Southerners who felt that the Republican abolitionists would employ the violent tactics, used previously by John Brown, to deprive them of their chattel slaves. However, while President Lincoln’s election was the immediate cause of the American Civil war, tensions had been simmering between the Northern and Southern States since the Missouri Compromise of 1820.
