Self-awareness: A tool for providing culturally competent care.

This paper is a summary of the assigned article, with great content which is very beneficial to me. Self- awareness, increased my confidence in interacting and providing culturally competent care to my patients’ of diverse cultural, race or religious belief and enhanced my ability to manage difficult or challenging situations I am confronted with, as a nurse.

Assigned Article Summary

This article by Younas (2020), is directed towards advancing cultural competent care in the healthcare setting. Cultural competence is essential in establishing a healthy relationship with patients, it significantly benefits healthcare Organizations and patients. Nurses should always work to respect the diverse culture when caring for their patients as this will improve the capability and quality of their work. Self- aware nurses reflect on their strengths and limitations; acknowledge their racial cultural, and religious prejudices; and recognize negative and positive potentials to care for patients in different contexts and settings Younas (2020, p.62).

The article further discussed how to apply culture to practice, stating that self- awareness reminds nurses not to make discernments about their patients’ cultural competence.
